Whether your go-to is a crackling wood fire or a flick-of-the-switch gas setup, a little maintenance can help you avoid headaches later. Think chimney clogs, fire hazards, or (yikes) gas leaks. No, thank you.
Wood-Burning Fireplaces and Stoves
Wood-burning fireplaces also carry the highest risk of causing home fires. That’s why annual cleanings and inspections are non-negotiable. When you burn wood, it leaves behind a residue called creosote that builds up inside your chimney. Over time, creosote can block airflow and catch fire… not ideal when you’re trying to relax in your slippers.
Schedule a professional chimney sweep to clean and inspect your fireplace once per year. Some folks use creosote logs as a budget-friendly boost between cleanings, but these are not a full substitute.

Gas Fireplaces
It’s also recommended to service gas fireplaces annually by your propane provider. They will inspect the unit to check for gas leaks, test the safety shut-off valve, and ensure the ignition system is working correctly. If you have a vented unit, they will also ensure the venting system is clear of blockages and operating safely.
Keep an eye out for cracks and significant soot buildup, as these are indicators that it’s time for a service.
Safety Detectors
Regardless of what kind of fireplace you have, working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are a must.
- Detectors in every bedroom and on every floor
- Test them monthly
- Change batteries twice per year
- Replace units every 7–10 years
