Creating defensible space

Defensible space isn’t just good for your property—it’s good for your peace of mind. This year, the Village of Angel Fire is helping homeowners take practical steps to protect their homes and neighborhoods.

Defensible space is the buffer between your home and surrounding forested areas—a zone designed to slow, or stop, a wildfire before it reaches your house. Creating that buffer means clearing dead vegetation, spacing trees properly, and removing ladder fuels that let flames climb, and ensuring there are proper fire-resistant materials in place.

A well-maintained defensible space can make all the difference in how a fire behaves—and whether your home can be defended in an emergency.

The Village of Angel Fire’s fire department is offering free defensible space assessments this year. All you have to do is fill out a quick form and schedule a visit. A team member will walk your property, point out what needs attention, and help you understand what qualifies for compliance under the Village ordinance. Within about two weeks, you’ll receive a written report with personalized recommendations.

If you’d like to read the full ordinance yourself, it’s posted on the Village website—or just send us a quick message and we’ll forward it to you.

Once you’ve cleared brush and trimmed trees, the Village’s Slash Program makes disposal easy. You can sign up for a pickup or drop it off at the transfer station yourself.

Slash piles should contain only branches and limbs, no trash, construction debris, or pine needles. (Pine needles can be dropped off separately, but fees apply.)

When your home passes inspection and meets the Village’s defensible-space standards, you qualify for a reduction in the wildfire-protection fee that appears on your Village utility bill. It’s one more way the Village rewards proactive homeowners who keep the community safer.
